a turbocharger works on the engine only, it does not matter if the gearbox is manual or automatic

Redefine your question, for engine or gearbox ?
Somewhere around the gearbox in the engine bay.
To check the automatic gearbox oil level on a 2002 Passat TDI Estate, pull out the dipstick with the gearshift in neutral. Let the engine run and check on the oil level.Ê
The weight of the bugatti veyron engine (16 cylinder W-form) is 430kg without the gearbox. The weight of the 7 gear gearbox is 110kg.
That means the switch on the gearbox or lever is stuck for some reason.
You have to remove the engine and gearbox. you will need a engine crane. Once you have the engine and box out, remove gearbox from engine and replace clutch, Refit gearbox to engine, put engine and gearbox back in car. Easy job if you have access to a engine crane.
Remove driveshafts (drain oil), undo linkage and electrical connections, undo support under battery, undo bolts to engine, remove gearbox from underneath.
It seems that generally there are engine problems, even with new ones, all of them with the engine not even starting. A shifty gearbox as well seems to be a prominent problem.
Only if it has a completely different gearbox (with overdrive) fitted. You would then have to find an engine to fit the gearbox. You may have problems fitting this into the bodyshell, so I suggest you source a secondhand body from a car that will fit the engine and gearbox. Maybe you could fit the body from the car you took the engine and gearbox out of? Then all you need is an interior, driveshafts, brakes, wheels etc. and the job is done!
