It could but they usually don't fail that way. There are a lot of things that can make a car shut off while driving some are catastophic failures and some are things like fuel pumps, blown power fuses and such. Are you getting any warning lights with the shut down. If you are go to your nearest auto parts store and have them read your diagnostics for you. Usually they will do it free in hopes that you will buy your parts from them.
