I don't think at 6 weeks you can hear the heartbeat -- you MIGHT be able to see it in an ultrasound, but probably won't be able to hear until quite a bit later.
As to the spotting, is it more brown than red and how heavy is it? Read this Wiki Answer:

Do you know you are pregnant now, have you had a positive test? Aslong as it is just spotting you are probably ok. This is what doctors are for, to tell you what is happening. You cannot miscarry at 3 weeks as you would not even know you are pregnant. If you miscarried 3 weeks after conception that is 5 weeks pregnant not 3 weeks.

im 6 weeks and 5 days pregnant and about two days ago i had a gush of watery blood and then brown spotting after that. i called the doctor scared but they said as long as it didnt happen more than once and the spotting is brown you should be fine. if it shows your baby is fine then you shouldn't worry. from what i have read and hear spotting is common and even some bleeding can be fine, not always, but in any case you should report to your doctor. good luck.

Call your doctor immedeatley they should be able to fit you in or go to the hospital. I had bright red spotting aroun 11 weeks that became heavier and when I went to the doctors I was told I was miscarrying.
