Yes Chevylows10 you are correct you use 20W-50 in the Primary not gear oil.
I recommend Amsoil MCV 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil I've been running in my 1990 FXR with no problems.

HD makes a weight of oil they call "Sport-Trans" that is made for use in the Sportster primary. Or, you can use any 30W non-detergent oil.

Your machine uses one quart of H-D "Sport-Trans" type oil in the primary.
