Your 2002 Hyundai accent has problems shifting past 3rd gear but sometime when on the highway its fine it seems to have the most problems when you have to slow down or stop like on sidestreets?

we had this same problem with our 99 sonota....ended up being low on Transmission Fluid.
I'm a Hyundai tech, sounds more like a pulse generator issue.

Remove the shifting console cover. Remove the shifting light retaining ring. Push the light bulb in and turn at the same time. The light bulb will come out. Reverse the process install the new light bulb.

What makes you think Hyundai's are rubbish there are many owners who are more than happy owning and driving Hyundai's Totally agree, I have a Hyundai Coupe (Tiburon) and have had zero problems with it. Won't exactly set the road on fire, but it grips well (better than my previous Mazda), fuel economy is pretty good and it's cheap to run. BTW, this is the second Hyundai I have bought.

Sounds like the reverse switch is either damaged, or wired backwards... Did you have your clutch done recently?

Where is the Hyundai accent pulse generator?
The pulse generator on the Accent is not internal. Take the black plastic cover off your transmission, which is on the bottom left. There is one blue? switch attached to wires coming out of the transmission which can be safely taken apart and its connectors cleaned. This often solves shifting problems, at least for a while. Follow these wires and you'll come to the pulse generator, a silver device, also on the left of the car.

I had the same problem. Apprently is a sensor that gone wrong I had to take it to the dealers to get it replace. It was free under warranty.
