That is typical of a hydraulic pressure problem INSIDE the transmission. Sometimes it's as simple as a dirty filter or low fluid level, other times it's a pump problem or bad seals that are allowing pressurized oil to leak. Sometimes you can squeeze a little extra life out of a transmission by putting in a can of transmission seal conditioner, such as Trans-X. Usually when a transmission starts doing what you describe, it's done.
