Check your spark plugs. Check your spark plug wires for crack or being loose. You can check your wire at night for cracks, you shold see it acring somewhere. If your car has a distributor, check the cap for cracks and corrosion on the internal connectors. Check your fuel pressure/ fuel filter. If it has a carb, check for vacuum leaks.

Try for a cheap fix and change your gas cap. Sounds like it could be vapour lock.
