The Check Engine Light should come on every time you start your vehicle,but it should go off within a second or two. This lets you know the light is working. Now, if you mean it is coming on and staying on, then you have a problem that is effecting the emissions controls. Have the vehicle scanned with a simple OBD1 scanner for the fault code. That code will lead you to the problem. If you have not replaced the plugs and plug wires, in the last 50,000 miles do so now. O2 sensors throw lots of codes on these engines. If yours is high mileage it would be a good idea to replace them. Buy a vehicle specific one not a generic one that the auto marts sell.
