Learn about Running Shoes and Orthopedics
Purchasing new running shoes can be a confusing process that does not always end with a good pair of running shoes. There are some misleading aspects that cannot be relied upon when choosing running shoes, such as the price of the shoes or the number of features that are listed. Neither of these factors can be used to determine whether a specific shoe is appropriate for a specific runner. Instead, the individual foot of the runner as well as the type of running that is going to be performed need to be considered to choose the best new running shoes.
The first thing to consider is the type of running that the shoes are needed for. This can be casual running for exercise across mainly paved roads and sidewalks, or it can be running down trails or cross country. Additionally, competitive running requires shoes that are different from shoes for recreational running. These factors affect whether the shoe should have soles that are lightweight, or soles that are heavy with tough treads that are able to withstand broken terrain and stick to slippery surfaces. For competitive running, running shoes often focus on being lightweight and flexible, while recreational shoes focus more on comfort.
The individual configuration of the runner's feet can dictate which types of new running shoes are necessary. The main concern is whether the feet have high arches, normal arches, or are flat footed. This will narrow down the selection of shoes since a shoe that has extra padding to support a high arch is unusable by someone who is flat footed. Another concern is how far the foot turns inwards while running, a property called pronation. Pronation might need to be compensated for with new running shoes to prevent injuries. These types of shoes do not have toes that turn inwards but are straight instead.
There are several features that new running shoes can have that might be beneficial to the runner, although not everyone always agrees. Extra cushioning in the sole or gel-filled pouches can help to absorb the impact of running on hard surfaces. Running shoes can be made from thin material that is meant to be breathable to keep feet cool during long runs. There are even new running shoes that have pedometers built into the shoe or flashing lights so the runner can be seen at night on dark roads.
