Welcome to Nashville, Tennessee! Known as both "Music City" and the "Athens of the South," Nashville is a surprisingly diverse destination that offers treats to every traveler. Here, country music mingles with classical concerts, rustic architecture gives way to modern skyscrapers, and long-time residents welcome entrepreneurial newcomers.

Some popular Nashville attractions include the world-famous Ryman Auditorium, the Parthenon -- a reproduction of the Greek temple -- and The Hermitage, a home of President Andrew Jackson. The city's rolling green hills, extensive park system, and moderate climate also help make Nashville a favorite vacation destination.

Orientation

Nashville is located in north central Tennessee. The Cumberland Valley is located to the east, and the Cumberland River flows through the city. The city's interstate highways include I-40, I-65, and I-24. An inner beltway links I-440 to the city, and I-840 makes an outer southern loop between the city's three interstate highways.

The Weather

Nashville has four distinct seasons, but its winters are mild. January temperatures hover around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, but July temperatures reach 90 degrees. Springtime brings flowers and showers, summers are mostly hot but not terribly humid, and autumns bring a slight chill at night. Nashville winters rarely see snow, but roads become icy; drive with caution.

Nashville Neighborhoods

Nashville boasts a number of distinct neighborhoods. Music Row may be the most well-known to outsiders; it's the street that Capital, BMI, and other recording studios call home. Music Row abuts Vanderbilt University, a top-notch school with beautiful grounds that are worth strolling on a sunny day.

Eighth Avenue South, not far away, is a haven for antiquing. At night, this premier antiques district gives way to drinks and dining. Arnold's Country Kitchen is a notable destination: guests are seated family style - perhaps with strangers - and served a traditional Southern dinner of "meat and three." Eighth Avenue South is also home to Zanie's Comedy Club, a venue that's hosted greats such as Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Foxworthy, and Paula Poundstone.

Nashville's Midtown district is also appealing to out-of-towners and locals alike. Located near the Vanderbilt campus, it offers crab shacks and dive bars - ideal atmospheres for warm southern nights. Meanwhile, the Green Hills district is ideal for boutique browsers and jazz buffs. Green Hills is also home to the Greenhouse Bar, an actual former greenhouse that maintains its natural dÈcor but also serves up beer and cocktails.

Welcome to Nashville. Enjoy!
