It 'sliced' off the vast distance traders previously had to travel around the 'horn of Africa' ! Until the Suez canal was built, ships had to travel down the west coast of africa and back up the east coast - in order to travel to and from the far East. Building the canal meant ships could take a 'short-cut' between Egypt and Jordan - cutting months off the journey.

The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway that links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It provided a shorter sea route (especially for trade) than the longer passage round Cape Hope on the southern tip of South Africa.
