It's probably bad wiring somewhere and you need to test the coil connectors for power and try to trace the flaky wiring. It's a pain I know.

faulty distributer, not hard to change ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I was just wondering if you changed the spark plug wires one at a time ? Otherwise, it could be quite easy to have a mixup on the coil pack.

Three on each side of the motor. Follow the spark wires.
Check spark plug wires, and voltage on the distrubutor.
spark plugs are either not put in right or gaps not right.Also check your spark plug wires.
Two of the wires are mixed up. The result is that two cylinders are attempting to fire at the wrong time. It can result in the popping sound when the cylinder fires at the wrong time.
