with a scan tool, you can go to your local auto shop and they should scan the cars pcm for less than $30.00. or you can go to your local auto-zone and they will read it for free, but mind you it will not be that accurate and they can only read codes they cant clear them.

You need a engine scanner and then go into transmission trouble codes. Write them down,get a book, look them up, and read. Most scanners will tell you whats going on.
Assuming you want to read the DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) stored in your 97 Pontiac, your local auto parts store can read them (if any exists) for you at no cost. You can google the results you get for a definition of codes. Keep in mind the codes that come up may only be the result of another underlying problem.
If you can not read codes with a scanner you have a wiring problem.
