I never had to replace this bulb on my 1999, but I just replaced it on my 2004 Alero, and the two are nearly identical, so the procedure is probably the same. Open the trunk lid. Above the license plate, you will see a rectangular opening with the bulb assembly inside, held in by two screws--one on each side of the opening. Remove the screws and maneuver the bulb assembly until you can pull it through the opening. Twist the lens 1/8 turn to separate it from the base. Pull the old bulb out of the base. Reverse the process to put everything back together. When putting the screws back in, you need to hold the bulb assembly or the screw will push it back in the opening too far for the threads to engage the metal clip. If the first screw won't grab, try the other one. Once you get one started, it will hold the assembly while you start the other screw.
