If the bolts will not tighten, you might have stripped out one or more bolts. Without actually seeing the problem it can be hard to diagnose, but that it just an opinion. Take a look at the bolts to see if they are stripped. Try to put one of those bolts into the untightened holes to see if it will bolt down. WHEN doing this, screw the bolt to the left until you feel it catch, then turn to right. Otherwise, you might need to buy a new head from a junk yard or ebay. To change the valve cover gaskets on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L, disconnect the battery cables. Then use a wrench to loosen the valve cover bolts. Remove the old gasket from the cover and the manifold using a cleaner designed for this purpose (found at automotive parts stores). Put adhesive on the manifold, and valve cover. Line with a new gasket on the valve cover and replace the valve covers. Tighten the bolts and re-connect the battery.

pull the dust cover off the transmission and the converter bolts are easily accessable from there. there are three nuts and bolts that hold the converter to the fly wheel. probably 9/16 head bolts. turn the motor by hand until you see one.... tighten it and rotate motor again by hand until you see the next... tighten it and turn it to the third... tighten it and then reinstall dust cover
take the plastic cover guard off and it is 2 bolts right on top take them out and it is free
