Hard shifts are not improved by any type of transmission fluid.
Your automatic transmission is controlled by a computer. When it detects certain faults, the computer puts the transmission into "high line pressure" mode, meaning that it's trying to protect itself.
If it's a really hard shift, it could be that the computer has detected a fault. On the other hand, if it doesn't shift hard when you're driving, it could just be that the idle speed is too high.
BTW, when the computer puts the transmission into "High Line", it also turns on the malfunction light.
A 97 Saturn that stays in forward gears could be one of two problems. Either the electronic transmission controls are stuck in forward, or the internal bands in the transmission have welded themselves together.
on the transmission
If the transmission is slipping or shifting badly it COULD be a sign of a valve body failure. If the transmission will not engage reverse or any of the forward gears, it COULD be a sign of a valve body failure.
The differential is bad inside the transmission.
find where the shift linkage connects to the transmission, on some model cars the neutral safety switch is there, it may be a multi switch also controlling the reverse lights.
Well, to start, the Saturn Vue wasn't available in 1994, may be your issue......
Most likely pressure control solenoid in transmission....Easily tested with proper scan tool ALSO try changing EGR valve. Will REALLY HELP!!!! I just changed mine, all my hard shifting and jerking in reverse went away.
To replace the neutral safety switch on a 1998 Saturn SC2, first disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Locate the neutral safety switch on the transmission, typically near the gear selector. Remove the electrical connector and any mounting bolts securing the switch, then install the new switch in reverse order. Finally, reconnect the battery and test the switch to ensure it functions correctly.
the reverse safety back up switch is located on top of the transmission next to the clutch resivior
sounds like a motor or transmission mount is your likely problem
The neutral safety switch is located on the back side of the transmission where the trans shift cable is attached. Please visit my Bio for a link to my saturn help site, under transmissions you will find an image of the neutral safety switch.
any auto transmission car that starts in neutral and not in park has a problem with the safety switch. Fix it or bypass it.
