The Republican Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Democratic Party. It is often called the Grand Old Party or the GOP. Founded in Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and modernizers, the Republican Party quickly surpassed the Whig Party as the principal opposition to the Democratic Party. It first came to power in 1860 with the election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency and presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Today, the party supports a conservative and/or center-right platform, with further foundations in supply-side fiscal policies and social conservatism. The Republican Party is currently the second largest party with 55 million registered voters as of 2004, encompassing roughly one-third of the electorate.[1] There have been nineteen Republican Presidents. Republicans currently fill a minority of seats in both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, hold a minority of state governorships, and control a minority of state legislatures. In the Presidential election of 2008, the party's nominees were Senator John McCain, of Arizona, for President and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for Vice President.
The Republican Party (often abbreviated as GOP, which stands for "Grand Old Party") is one of the two major parties in the US. Modern Republicans have several factions in their party. The Christian conservatives are very influential: they believe that government should encourage traditional morality and always oppose abortion, gay marriage, and many types of contraception. The Libertarian wing of the party believes in avoiding foreign entanglements (especially wars), and wants to keep the government out of people's personal life, including whether or not one uses marijuana. And the Big Business wing of the party believes the government should help corporations, and that by lowering taxes on businesses, they will create more jobs. Republicans are often identified with a belief in "small government" and with aligning themselves with the needs of business. Many Republicans also oppose social programs such as welfare or food stamps, which they believe creates a culture of dependency.
