The position of which was admitted first, and is thus actually the 39th state, depends on which of the Dakotas you live in. However, the two were listed alphabetically in the Statutes At Large because President Benjamin Harrison directed his Secretary of State to shuffle the proclamations of statehood so that he would not know which he was signing first.
