The battle of Stalingrad was the most brutal, entire German 6th army surrounded and wiped out by the soviets. The German soldiers trapped in the city suffered from disease, starvation and the freezing winter as well as fighting house to house with the Russian's. Some even resorted to cannibalism.

The single bloodiest day of WWII was not the bombing of Hiroshima or Nagaski.

The bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed approx 90,000 people and the bomb dropped on Nagaski killed approx 70,000 people. While each of those are horrendous totals the are not the largest.

There were several examples days when conventional warfare accounted for far more casualties than either of the atomic bombings.

• For example the B29 firebombing of Tokyo killed 120,000 people on 10 March 1945.

• On 15 Feb 1945 the firebombing of several German cities (Dresden et al) killed 175,000 people.

• During the siege of Stalingrad July/August 1942 there were approx 1.8 million casualties on the Russian side and an additional 150,000 on the German side.

• On the night of 12 - August the bombing by the German Luftflotte accounted for the deaths of approx 400,000 Russian citizens.

• Finally there is the whole issue of the Holocaust and the estimated 7.0 million people exterminated by the German death camps (6.0 million Jews and 1.0 million others). Many (approx 1.5 million) of them in March and April of 1945 as the Allies closed in on the camps. It is possible that on any give day in March or April 1945 that the death totals from these camps plus the death total from the sustained combat could have reached the 150,000 + level.
