James Madison lived in the White House when the British set fire to it in 1814.

Madison had left some time before the British arrived but his wife, Dolley, barely had time to escape before they came to torch the house.

The was another serious fire in The West Wing due to a faulty chimney flue while Herbert Hoover was President. The living quarters were not threatened but extensive damage was done to the oval office area.
