It is somewhat hard to say. The country has become more diverse over the years. People came from all over the world in large numbers. There is more economic diversity- the rich have gotten richer and are willing to spend money to keep it that way. We have a large number of illegal immigrants who do not want to learn English and want less Immigration restrictions. We have groups who want large families and more government help and we have groups with no children who have little interest in making it easier to raise children or have better schools. Letting women vote and the women's rights movement tended to polarize. Gays have developed political power and have become somewhat of a divisive force.
The two main political parties found in the US today are the Republicans and the Democrats. Members of the Independent Party tend to caucus with the Democrats.
While it was not a political party in the idea of political parties today, those who opposed the Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans (first political party) favored a strong federal (national) government and weak state governments. They took the name "Federalists" as that was the name given to the people who had supported ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
