The Peloponnesian War began when Sparta declared war on Athens in 431 BCE. This conflict arose from escalating tensions between the two powerful city-states, primarily over issues of power, influence, and territorial disputes. The war lasted for nearly three decades, fundamentally altering the balance of power in ancient Greece and leading to significant social and political changes. Ultimately, it resulted in the decline of Athenian dominance and the rise of Sparta as a leading power.
The Daedalus and Icarus conflict refers to the tension between knowledge and hubris in Greek mythology. Daedalus, a master craftsman, creates wings for himself and his son Icarus to escape imprisonment. Icarus, however, ignores his father's warnings about flying too close to the sun, leading to his downfall when the wax holding his wings melts. This story illustrates the dangers of overreaching ambition and the balance between innovation and caution.

Prior the Law of the Twelve Tables legal rules where based on religious rules and practices which were kept secret by the priests, who were all patricians. Many of these priests sat in the senate (which was not an elected body). Moreover, the senate did not publish the minutes of its proceeding or its decrees. This left ample room for abuse by the rich and powerful including the consuls, the two annually elected heads of the city, who sometimes destroyed senate documents. The plebeians wanted written laws which would clarify rules regarding matters which now we would call criminal and civil law. They were written in a simple language which could be understood by literate people (though there were not many at that time) and were posted at the forum so that anyone could consult them. The plebeians also obtained an agreement that all decrees and proceedings of the senate would be stored at a plebeian temple on the Aventine Hill and looked after by officials called the plebeian aediles. Thus, they won the right to be informed about the law and legal developments and the aediles became legal experts (previously only the patricians were legal experts). One important matter for the plebeians was to have procedures for the trial of (poor) defaulting debtors which would provide some protection for them. The (rich) creditors were in the habit of abusing them: imprisoning them, torturing them and sometimes selling them as slaves. The Law of the Twelve Tables provided for this.
Zeus entered the conflict primarily to maintain balance and order among the gods and mortals. As the king of the Olympian gods, he often intervenes when disputes among divine beings threaten the stability of both the heavenly and earthly realms. His involvement typically reflects a desire to uphold justice and prevent chaos, especially when the actions of other gods or heroes escalate tensions. Ultimately, Zeus's motivations are tied to his role as a protector and enforcer of cosmic law.

The Roman Republic balanced its powers through a system of checks and balances among its key institutions: the Senate, the Consuls, and the Assemblies. The Senate, comprised of elite patricians, provided stability and governance, while the two Consuls, elected annually, ensured executive power was shared and limited. Additionally, popular Assemblies allowed citizens to vote on laws and elect officials, providing a voice to the plebeians. This complex structure aimed to prevent any single entity from gaining too much power, fostering a degree of political stability and accountability.
Tribunes were given the power of veto, which allowed them to block or overturn any decisions or actions made by patrician officials that they deemed unjust or harmful to the plebeians. This gave them the ability to protect the interests and rights of the common people and prevent the abuse of power by the patricians. The veto power of the tribunes played a crucial role in maintaining a balance of power and ensuring some degree of fairness in the Roman Republic.
