"Celt" is now a disputed term in describing populations. Celtic-speaking populations passed from western Asia through Europe in the 2nd millennium BC, eventually settling in the western part of the continent, though in the absence of stable states in most of the region this constituted a migration rather than an invasion. Celtic-speaking peoples called Gauls by the Romans accomplished several spectacular invasions of the Roman Empire, but later receded further westward under pressure from Germanic-speaking neighbours.

The Celts were known to have migrated across Europe and settled in regions that are now modern-day France, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, and the British Isles. They were also present in parts of Germany and northern Italy. The extent of their influence and control varied across different regions.
