"Celt" is now a disputed term in describing populations. Celtic-speaking populations passed from western Asia through Europe in the 2nd millennium BC, eventually settling in the western part of the continent, though in the absence of stable states in most of the region this constituted a migration rather than an invasion. Celtic-speaking peoples called Gauls by the Romans accomplished several spectacular invasions of the Roman Empire, but later receded further westward under pressure from Germanic-speaking neighbours.
