After 1972 volkswagon beetle running fine all day when we got home it will not start. key doesn't seem to do anything it has a new battery. Could there be a trick with the ignition?

check your battery post terminals for good clean connection. If no problem there then you might have a bad generator. Your generator might not be charging your battery. If you installed a new battery and ran your bug all day chances are that your engine was running off of the battery which was not being recharged by your generator. As soon as you turned off your engine and tried to re-start it, your battery did not have enough juice to crank the engine over. Good luck.

Will it even crank? If it won't, you have an ignition switch or lock cylinder going bad. If it does crank, just not running, then check to make sure fuel pressure is good and that the ignition coil is good. When exactly will it not start?

It sounds like the battery only has enough of a charge to run the ignition and the alternator is not contributing anything so as soon as you put additional load on it, the engine dies from lack of power for the ignition coil. If you have a volt meter, check the battery voltage BEFORE you start the engine. If it'needs a jump-start again do so and start the engine. Then remove the jumper cables and test the voltage level in the battery with the engine RPM at around 1000. With the engine running it should be somewhere near 13.5 Volts. If it's anything less than 12 V, you have a problem with the alternator.
Why would a car be completely dead with no lights electronics or ignition after it was just running fine?
The only thing that comes to mind in a situation where a car that was running a short time ago and now is COMPLETELY DEAD is a failure of the battery or the primary cables/connections. I'd begin by checking the cable connections at the ends on the battery. The ends at the battery are more prone to failure than the other ends, but check both ends of the cables starting at the battery side. One would be wise to do this with caution, or, if lacking sufficient expertise, with some help.

I hope you did not remove a cable from the positive or negative battery posts while the engine was running (don't do it)? If so, it may cause damage to your alternator, and it will short out your ignition in the engine (engine stops). If there is no damage, it should work after reconnecting the battery posts. If you didn't do the above situation, I would check for a loose connection on the terminal or a corroded/broken cable. THe computer may need alittle time to relearn idle.

Yes, a loose battery cable will prevent the alternator from charging the battery. The drain on the battery is not caused by the engine not running unless an accessory is left on. Most likely, the drain is caused by accessories (radio, lights, etc) while the engine is running due to the battery not receiving its charge from the alternator and then not having enough charge left to start the engine.
