In a pinch, yes but they also create more area for corrosion.
The red one ( bigger post ) is positive, the other one goes to a grounded point.
It probably needs shims added or subtracted to it. the wrong amount of shims will make it start hard
no a egr valve would not make a dead battery. a bad alternator or maybe a bad connection post to battery would make it die ,
The plastic case is cracked around the post allowing fumes to corrode the post. Buy some of those treated battery post washers and a can of battery terminal protector spray. Or, get a new battery. It is very common for the battery to discharge on a vehicle sitting idle for 3 months. First disconnect the positive + & negative- battery cables, and clean the battery post and cable connections off. Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease or Vaseline to the battery post and connect the negative - cable. Put a battery charger on the battery and let it fully charge overnight. If it will not accept a charge it is defective. It it does show fully charged, connect the positive + cable and see if the engine will start. if not, then more than likely the battery is dead and needs replacing.
Do not install the shims. Your starter should work fine.
You should connect and disconnect the negative post first. This way, if your tool touches ground when you work on the positive post, you don't short circuit the battery.
No. If the battery post if missing then you will have to buy a new battery. My question to you is how is a battery post missing?
YEP!
You can buy an adapter to convert a side post to top post or visa versa.
Yes they will work but if the car is not equipped with side post cables you will have to buy adapters. Just buy the correct battery for your car.
I would suspect you have loose or corroded battery post connections.
It is as simple as changing the battery cables.
Disconnect battery. Then the electrical connection on the starter solenoid. Remove the starter bolts and the starter. Note the location of the spacer shims. Installation is the reverse. Don't forget the spacers shims or you will get noise when starting the vehicle.
The post with the red cable attached to it. The positive post is slightly larger than the negative post. + & - is normally printed on the top of the battery next to the post.
It grounds the body and motor of the car so that everything electrical will work. Anything electrical has to have positive and negative to work. At least in a car.
You can buy and adaptor to connect the top post cables to a side post battery. Or you can simply replace the side post cables with top post cables.
