This may seem like a stupid question to ask, but is there gas in the tank?Let your mechanic do a compression test. If compression results are ok, then troubleshoot the following systems: fuel delivery, ignition, air supply. Vehicle should start if these systems are all working properly, even if it runs shabbily. You need good compression, a spark, and a mixture of air and gas for combustion to take place.
