Replace it.
If you are using a new gasket, no.
Valve cover gasket
Changing a valve cover gasket really has nothing to do with an engine starting or not. You need to check your power and gas for problems in starting.
You can change the head gasket by removing the valve cover. Remove the gasket and clean the gasket surface. Put the new head gasket on the cleaned surface.
The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library. Oohlalajameshunt, reiterate the answer of this statement. I recently just changed a 6 cylinder 1998 Grand Prix 3.8 valve cover gasket. I started at around 8:30 and finished around 2:30 pm, it could have been earlier but performing the repair myself took some time. It involves removing the alternator, serpentine belt, spark plugs, (make sure you number the plugs) check your wires for corrosion, so that you replace them as your replacing your valve cover gaskets. removing the coil rack and brakets also involved in replacing your gaskets. Called pep boys and they wanted 387.66 for the repair. Send me a picture of your engine and I'll resend you a work work picture repair guide. send response to barrywhite855@yahoo.com Thanks, James Hunt

Gasket that goes between head and valve cover to prevent leaks
The valve cover gasket, on a 2004 Jeep liberty, can be found by removing the valve cover. Peel the gasket off of the head and replace with a new gasket.
Assuming you mean "valve cover gasket", the gasket seals the valve cover to the head so as not to leak oil.
Begin by removing the valve cover from your 1995 Dodge. Remove the valve cover gasket and clean the surface. Put the new gasket on and return the valve cover to its original position.
Yes. The head gasket forms the seal between the engine block and the head(s). The valve cover gasket seals the gap between the valve cover and the valve train it is covering.
Valve cover gasket? Prevents oil from leaking out of valve cover Valve seal? Prevents oil from entering the combustion chamber.
The valve cover gasket on a Harley 883 motorcycle is changed by unbolting the valve cover and lifting it from the engine. The gasket can then be removed, the surface cleaned, and a new gasket put in place.
The valve cover ask it, on a S 40 Volvo, can be replaced by first removing the valve cover. Remove the old gasket and replace with a new gasket.
im guessing someone has told you that you have a 'leaking valve cover gasket'. the valve cover is normally on the top of the engine, above the pistons, sometimes its where you put the oil into. The gasket is where the cover joins with the block.
