It is just a matter of getting under there and getting it out. These steps apply to a 1998. OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE: Do not get under a vehicle unless it is on jack stands. Do not get under a vehicle that is on any type of jack. Do not use cinder blocks (concrete blocks). JACK STANDS OR RAMPS ONLY. Disconnect the NEG battery cable. Very important step here. After that, remove the exhaust pipe section between the manifold and the catalytic converter. Remove the brace rod between the engine and transmission. Remove the heat shield, it just snaps on, from the solenoid. Disconnect the wires from the starter. There is a bracket on front end of the starter, remove the bolt that attaches the bracket to the engine block. Remove the two remaining bolts from rear end of starter. The starter should now be on your neck, however they are lighter than they used to be. Transfer front end bracket to the new starter. If you fail to disconnect the battery, you are going to weld your wrench to the truck when you create a short circuit. And possibly damage the electrical system. Be sure you replace the heat shield. It is important. Check for exhaust leaks after you're done. You may need new gaskets at each end of exhaust section. I've never done this job on this truck, but it may be conceivable that the exhaust section can be only partially removed.
If its anything like a 93 all you do is disconnect the battery, disconnect and mark for reinstallation the wires at the starter. Remove the two bolts that hold it, and drop it out. Make sure to hold on to any shims that might be there.
You might have to take the motor mounts bolt and disconnect the exhaust after the Y and at the monifolds and lift the motor slightly to get the starter out.
HOW TO REPLACE A STARTER ON A 1998 CHEVY MALIBU
i have a 1998 ford Triton f 150 how do i remove the exhaust manifold right side
locate starter, mark and remove wires, remove bolts, remove starter
The starter on a '98 V-6 Passport is located at the bottom of the engine along the transmission housing on the drivers side. It is only accesible via the bottom of the car, so you'll have to get the car up on blocks or a lift. I've never removed one (yet), but it looks to me like you have to remove the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter in order to get the thing out of there. Removal of the actual starter is the easy part, as it only has 2 bolts holding it in. I own a 1998 Honda Passport V6 2WD. Yesterday I replaced my stater. It is very easy to replace. I parked my passport with the driver side wheels on the curb, this way i did not have to use a jack. I went underneath and removed the two bolts (16mm) that held the starter in place, and then removed the wiring from the starter with 14mm socket and then the plug which was all very easy to do. After doing of this I removed the starter with no problems, I DID NOT have to remove the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter. Just be careful with all the debris and dirt underneath your vehicle, i had some fall into my eyes. I went to autozone and bought a new one for $124 with the Core (without the Core is +$50). In all it took me about 20 minutes to do. Like I said it is very easy and can be done without the removal of the exhaust pipe which everyone thinks is needed to be done. Have fun and be careful
Remove the positive cable from your 1998 Chevy Cavalier battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new starter.
you need to remove the left primary case and remove the gear from the end of the starter shaft. then you can remove the mounting bolts and the starter will slide out.
Looking at the motor it is right behind the Exhaust. The Exhaust is above and below the starter and solenoid.

From what I understand, you have to diconnect the exhaust system on the side that the starter motor is located on. To reassemble you have to replace the exhaust gasket with a new one. If you are replacing the starter, there is a GM starter that is a direct replacement for the Isuzu starter and costs quite a bit less.
Disconect the - battery cable Raise and support vehicle Remove wiring at the top of starter Remove mounting bolts Remove starter
The starter on a 1998 Toyota 4runner is held located on the transmission housing. The starter is held on by 2 bolts which mount it directly it the engine. Remove the two bolts to replace the starter.
