you pull the steering wheel off and underneath you will see a hole with a pin in it. turn your switch to the run position and push the pin up and it should come out

∙ 8y agoThere is a small hole right under your ignition in the steering column housing. You can feel it it's right in line with the center of your key. There's a little pin that comes out of your ignition lock assy that snaps down into the hole in the housing preventing the lock assy from sliding back out. You need to turn the ignition to the on position and push up into the hole with a pick or a finishing nail or a paper clip or a pin (you get the idea) then the ignition should wiggle out. Sometime the end of this assembly is broken off and all you have to fish it out and buy a new ignition. sometimes the pushrod has come unhooked from the bottom end of the steering column. I had the latter happen and I could start it if I held the key on start and pushed the tilt all the way up. If the key just turns freely it's probably the tab. Good luck. y'huck y'huck

∙ 9y agoThe ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE
On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible.
On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

∙ 15y ago1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Pull the steering wheel. To do that you'll need to remove the horn button, usually just two screws on the back of the steering wheel. Remove the single large nut that holds the steering wheel onto the column. You'll need to use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel from the splined shaft. BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE STEERING WHEEL NOTE OR EVEN MARK THE POSITION OF THE WHEEL ON THE SHAFT. IT HAS TO GO BACK THE SAME WAY!!!
3. You may have a dust cover or other plates covering the turn signal mechanism, but you should be able to figure that part out. They're all a little different.
4. There will be a couple screws that hold the keyswitch tumblers into place, pull the screws and the tumbler assembly should be relatively easy to remove.

∙ 10y agoReplacing the ignition switch actuator on a 1988 Ford f150 is a complicated and multi-step process. First, remove the necessary panels to gain access to the steering column. Second, remove the screws and bolts holding the steering column to the dash. Third, locate the ignition switch and remove the actuator rod, replacing it with a new one. Re-attach everything to the dash and replace the panels. If this does not work, or seems too confusing, it may be in one's best interest to seek out a professional mechanic.

It is easy . Go to auto parts store buy the ignition switch since directions are in the box. You will need one piece that you can make to hold the springs in place while removing it and replace it . Allow 4 hours for a beginner.
If this has the locking tilt wheel it is better to find a salvage yard and get the entire steering assembly . Can get for around $100. Parts and time for replacing the Ignition assembly if you can do it at all will not be worth the effort.
