There are a few things that can cause this, smell your exhaust if it is sweet or you can see vapor or fluid then you probably have a head gasket problem. If not then check your radiator cap, it may be broken and allowing fluid to run back into the overflow can when the system pressurizes when you are driving so you might not notice it, also if your thermostat is plugged or frozen shut yopu will overheat and lose a lot of coolant to steam evaporation through the cap. Either way you will have to observe the system while it is at operating temperature and pressure to determine the problem area, always start with the easiest or least expensive option and work your way up. Its not unheard of for a radiator to have a small hole that only leaks under pressure so look carefully and you will find it,fluid cannot leave that system without leaving a trace somewhere.
This is just another coolant hose, they fail because:The bypass is usually in a spot that gets oil leaks and this will cause it to fail earlyAll cooling hoses get old and tired
While the make and model of your vehicle are likely to influence the answer you get, the most likely cause is a damaged or loose coolant hose or gasket (likely one of the heater hoses from the location of the leak). If you don't want to spend the money to take the car into a shop, with a minimal amount of research it is usually easy to find what part(s) are responsible for leaks. Every car is prone to certain leaks and more often then not someone has had the exact same problem.
Low on coolant or a sticky thermostat, replace it.
There's alot of ways you can test your vehicle for head gasket ,but the best way would be a cylinder leakage test, because once you see bubbles going into your coolant reservoir/over flow tank confirms this issue .This is a DIY job
you can't reset it, fill your coolant up full, both rad and overflow. the light will go out. if it is still on when everything is full, then your coolant sensor is broken or unplugged. if you light goes off then comes on again and your coolant is low, then you have a leak. if you have a 3400 engine in your lumina common leaks are intake gaskets, waterpumps, and head gaskets.
Probably the thermostat is sticking.
If there aren't any visible leaks, its leaking internally. The 3.1L V6 engines are known for bad gaskets. Is there oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil? Is there a tan frothy substance on the oil fill cap? If so, your coolant is getting into the oil.
If your going through coolant then you have an internal head gasket leak you smell coolant because its getting into cylinder and burning
You have a blown headgasket and the motor is probably ruined.
If by water you mean engine coolant, yes. Loss of coolant, antifreeze, is a major cause of overheating.
The test plug is seeping
Yes, If to much leaks out this will cause the engine to over heat, smoke and or stall hence the name engine COOLant :)
Bad head gaskets leaking coolant into comustion chambers, reason for no visible leaks. common problem on diesel engines all over the world.

Yes. The original equipment intake manifold gaskets were of poor design and were prone to coolant leaks. Redesigned gaskets are available today.
If coolant leaks onto an engine it will cause no damage unless it leaks onto the alternator or into a wire harness connector of some sort. It is best to clean up leaked coolant as much as possible. It will smell a little when the motor is started. Leaked coolant on the ground is a danger to animals and children as it has a sweet smell but is very toxic.
change your antifreeze fill cap.
