Sloppy timing chain? Bad tranny, the lockup clutch in the torque converter can cause jolting..

no , that is not really true, but it is good sense to replace both while you already have engine torn down

If you wait for a transmission to have problems before you have it professionally flushed, you've waited to long. It really depends on your driving conditions but in most cases I would flush it every 50K, it will pay in the long run.

It really needs to be checked out but it doesn't sound good. It probably is ruined as the rings and pistons are probably melted.

You can fit up to a 502 Big Block if you really wanted too. The biggest problem being that this is a 1984 is the emissions part of this. I own a 1984 old 98 regency I think its the elite edition with the leather. Anways it has a 5.0L V8 in it and the room is there just working around the computer aspec it the real issue.
