Checked to see if your steering wheel is locked. If not, then your problem is the tumblers. Replace the mechinical ignition switch. Cause- Having too many keys hanging with the ignition key.
Turn the steering wheel hard to the left or right while turning the key.
Try tuging on the steering wheel while trying to turn the key. Check the position of the front wheels, they can transmit tension back up the steering colum and lick the ignition switch.
It may be that when you shut down your car earlier you had your steering wheel turned just so. Try inserting your key in the ignition and turn your steering wheel just slightly and see if that will unlock the switch. I had that happen to me and that is all I needed to do. Hope this helped.
The steering and ignition will become locked on a 97 Chevy Cavalier if the key is not inserted into the ignition and turned. This helps to prevent theft.

Try wiggling the steering wheel
the ignition key will not turn if the steering wheel is locked in place. The steering wheel locks in place when it is turned with the ignition off. If the wheel is locked just try turning the wheel back and forth and turn the key at the same time, this will unlock the wheel, and allow the key to turn

Your key could be worn. Try moving your steering wheel while turning the ignition. If the locked steering is in a bind the key will not turn over.
So it would seem. If the ignition is in the column it may also be jammed by the steering wheel lock. Try turning the steering wheel and holding it while turning the ignition key.
It is very possible that your steering wheel is locked. You may also be having a problem with your ignition system.Ê
You can't, you have to replace the ignition switch
There may be something jammed inside your ignition. If this is not the problem then you will need to have a new ignition installed.
