The factory shop and repair manual if they will sell you one. Then I prefer the Chilton brand Then Haynes All will do for basic things like torque specs and spark plug gaps.
The availability of pictures will depend on a few variables including the year of your vehicle and how much of the vehicle is factory original. For original equipment pictures, check your local auto parts stores for repair books for your specific vehicle published by companies such as Chilton's or Haynes. You may also check with the parts stores' catalogs to see if they offer a picture of the specific part you are looking for.
That is mostly a matter of personal preference. Both manuals contain a lot of useful and important information. My personal opinion is that Chilton's manuals tend to be very technical in nature and geared towards experienced mechanics, whereas Haynes manuals tend to lean more towards teaching inexperienced people or do-it-yourselfers how to perform maintenance and repairs on their vehicles. I would want to see a Chilton's library in my $100/hour mechanic's shop, but my personal library would be mostly Haynes and I would recommend a Haynes manual to anyone who doesn't know how to change a spark plug or tire and wants to learn how to.
If you're not familiar with brake jobs in general, purchase a Chilton's repair manual that covers your vehicle. Good brakes are a number one priority.
The Chilton or Haynes manuals have diagrams in them. I think one of them has actual pictures, but they're still available on eBay or Amazon.
Consult your public library for the Chilton series of auto repair books, your year and model. They may also have an online database by Chilton giving instructions on certain tasks.
You can get the information you are looking for from Chilton, Aldata, and Ford. There are others, but these are best.
Check your state's electronic library for Chilton library. For MI it's mel.org than mel databases than Chilton Library.
