Step 1: There is a long piece of plastic under the seat on the left side. Remove it.
To remove it, turn the nickel-sized, notched circle that is near the bottom of the long plastic piece. A big flat head screwdriver will do. This unlocks the plastic, so you just have to jostle it out after that.
Step 2: There is now an exposed bolt that you can see holding the seat to the frame. Remove the bolt and you are done.
Now you can get to the battery, which is probably what you were trying to do.
(Some people say you have to do the same thing on the other side, but on mine it is only on the left, from the perspective of someone sitting on the bike.)

you must remove the bolt behind the rear seat and remove the rear seat then you will see 2 small Allen head bolts remove them and the seat will come right off.

remove the passenger pad first, when removed it uncovers screws on the rear of the drivers seat. Remove these and it comes off.
You have to remove the Allen bolt on the rear of the passenger seat, then remove the two Allen bolts exposed when you removed the passenger seat. The driver seat should slide back and off now.

Use your key on the left side by the seat. turn it counterclockwise. and the front seat should pull off. Once you remove the front seat there are two releases to remove the rear seat.
Remove a bolt (hex) from either side at the bottom of the seat. Near the shock.
