Rotors typically pull off the distributor shaft after you remove the distributor cap. On some (GM), the rotor is held on by a couple screws and the rotor is aligned by matching the round boss to the round hole and the square boss to the square hole.

Asking how to remove the distributor leaves me wondering if you didn't mean the cap. The cap comes off with clips or screws, depending on the make of the engine. Some have quarter-turn L-bolts that have slotted heads for (usually) a flat screw driver...for those, push down slightly and turn it a quarter turn in the direction it turns easily. Once you have loosened the fasteners, the cap lifts off. Some distributors have coil packs that usually don't go bad and need to be transferred to the new cap. Screws hold them in place. You'll see once you have the cap off. Do not pull all of the ignition cables out at once, transfer them one-at-a-time to the new cap so you don't mix up the firing order.

Pulling the distributor, proper, is not terribly difficult but putting it back in means you need to align it the same way it came out. With a wrench on the center nut of the harmonic balancer, turn the engine until the rotor aligns with the index on the body of the distributor...that is the position the rotor will need to be in on reassembly. Take a picture, mark the index notch with chalk--whatever it takes...you can't be off a bit.

Take the retainer clamp off the distributor where it inserts into the engine block and pull the distributor out...piece of cake.
