There are at least two classic type filter wrenches ...
1 is a metal band usually about an inch wide that goes around the filter with a handle attached to it and as you turn the handle the band constricts around the filter squeezing until it is tight then begins to turn. There are many sizes of these and you must buy size appropriate for your filter.
The second is a seatbelt type which is basically a loop of seatbelt material with a square metal base. To use this you put the loop around the filter then spin the metal part until it takes up the slack in the seat belt then attach a ratchet(usually half inch drive with an extension) and use the ratchet to spin the filter off.
I would recommend only using filter wrenches for removal not for installation of filters as damage to the filter may result and it will make them way harder to remove in the future.

You can sometimes remove the oil filter by hand, but usually you need an oil filter wrench. Most auto supply stores and some hardware stores have these. The basic one is a metal band attached to a handle which you wrap around the filter. Others look like big pliers and others fit on a ratchet wrench. I prefer the last one.
You can unscrew your stuck oil filter with an oil filter wrench. If the oil filter wrench does not work, punch a metal rod through the oil filter. Turn the oil filter off with the metal rod.
Place a drip pan below of the oil filter. Attach an oil filter wrench to the filter. Turn the wrench to the left. When the oil filter is loose turn with your hand until it comes off.
