Failure of the tail lights can be caused by a blown fuse. If the tail lights are fused separately, nothing else will be not working. That is, everything else will be working. Find out if the tail lights are fused separately. Oh, and check fuses in a way that leaves no doubts as to whether they are good! Check the turn signals just for fun and set aside that bit of information with the bit about the brake lights working. Just in case. The fact that the brake lights/turn signals work doesn't lend a lot to diagnostics of tail light failure. These lights work on a mostly separate circuit that involves the flasher and a switch somewhere in the braking system. And the brake/turn signals frequently have a separate filament in the same lamp as the tail light. There isn't a lot of cross connectivity. The two systems are said to be related but separate according to a lot of mechanics. Sometimes it's the light switch. It could be a problem in the wiring harness, too. It is also possible that both sockets are making bad contact with the lamp bases or that both lamps themselves are bad, but this is highly unlikely. (It would not be appearing here as a possibility unless it had actually been observed, which it has. But, again, that a least probable scenario, and it would be a fluke.) This is general information, but answers the question in a way that might be a good place to jump off from when trying to think through the problem. Never undervalue the skills of an automotive professional. Be safe. Good luck.
Then the brake lights are out but the middle one still lights up. (:
It turns the rear brake lights on as a safety feature. The brake pedal is pushed in, causing the fluid to move forward in the brake cylinder, activating a brake light switch. Even if the vehicle is off, the lights will still come on.
The most likely cause is a bad brake light switch (if none of the brake lights illuminate) but if its only one of the brake lights, try changing the bulb. Even if they still work as running or turn lights because they have a double filament and may still work partially, but not as brake lights.
the brake switch at the pedal is stuck or out of adjustment.
if you have your parking brake off and it is still on, then you have a problem with your brakes somewhere, you need to check the fluid, lines, pads and all the other stuff
I have a 97 Tahoe and the brake lights were not working and the problem was in the emergency flasher switch. I just jiggled it and the brake lights worked so am thinking you might have the same problem. It could also be the brake pedal switch located right on the pedal arm.
brake lights dont work start here check break light fuse check bulbs in tail lights check stop light switch on brake pedal under dash if problem still exists there is a break or short somewhere in the wiring

I just took it to a garage today and was told it needed a turn signal assm. The price would be 780.00. I paid 89.99 for this info. and brought my car home. I had never tried the hazard lights and after reading this I went out to try my hazard lights. I found the hazard button stuck. after pushing it down forcefully the hazard lights went on and, now I have brake lights. This may be temporary I don't know, but I now have fully fuctioning lights. I had the same problem with my 99 grand prix and changed bulbs brake light swith , fuses and found out that it was a multi - function switch that was causing my brake lights not to work it was a little expensive but you need brake lights!I too had the same problem. I did the exact same thing as stated above, the hazard button was hard to push down, after I got it down, I had fully functioning brake lights. I would like to hear from the previous poster as to if this fixed his problem, or did it happen again?
I have a 1990 Chevy 1500 truck the brakelight switch is disconnected and it has no connector going to it. I replaced all the bulbs. And still my running lights are in the on position when i turn off the truck. My brake lights are still not working after replacing the lights. I have a RV brake accuator also under the steering column can you help me solve my problem?
You need a minimum of 2 brake lights, So if your car has 3 brake lights and one goes out, you are still legal. Some cars do not come equipped with 3 brake lights but others do such as a honda civic with a spoiler light do.
AnswerThe bulbs for the brake lights are usually separate from the normal tail light bulbs. Check and replace the brake bulbs first, and if they are still not working examine the fuses, switch and wiring.
Had the same problem with a ford Contour. Turned out to be a loose connection on the turn signal switch. remove top trim from steering column and dsisconnect and re-connect connectors. Good luck.
