Swelling should always be treated with COLD compress, not hot. But if the swelling persists or returns, see a doctor to find out what is causing it.
Cold reduce the swelling. Once that is no longer a problem, you would use warm to help loosen it up and help the healing process.

I currently have laryngitis and find that when I drink hot liquids (such as coffee), my ability to speak is temporarily made worse. When I drink an iced beverage, I am able to speak normally for a short period of time!
Broken? A cast is better. Injuries need to reduce swelling, which is done with cold. In some cases the swelling has to be reduced before the bones can be properly set. Healing and flexibility comes with heat.

A cold compress is best immediately after the injury to decrease swelling and to increase vasoconstriction to the area to help keep bruising to a minimum. After a day or so, when the swelling has decreased, apply warm compresses to increase blod flow and eliminate the bruising quicker.
Powdered juice dissolves faster in hot water, but tastes better in cold water.
