DNA polymerases adds complimentary bases during DNA replication; however, there can be transcription errors. Mutations occur when changes in the genetic materialproduce abnormal genetic coding's. For instance, point mutation is defined by a change in just one base pair; because the bases cannot code for an amino acid, abnormal proteins are formed in place of normal ones.

DNA polymerases aid in the synthesis of a new DNA strand to the old strand during replication - adding base-by-base. If the wrong base is inserted into the daughter strand, then a mutation has occurred. Some polymerases have a "proofreading" ability and will recognize and fix the incorrectly-placed base-pairs, but some mutations may remain.
