Spentwash is an effluent created by fermentation of sugar cane molasses to produce alcohol. It is also called dunder or vinasse. It has very high BOD & COD & it is difficult to dispose. Its volume can be reduced to minimum 50% by application of reverse osmois (RO) using special type of disc tube or plate tube membranes technology. It extracts colorless water form spentwash, which can be resued in mmolasses fermentation. The balance concentrated spentwash can either be composted or by mixing with biomass can be incinerated to achieve zero liquid discharge as desired by pollution control authorities. Rochem Separations Systems (I)P Ltd. has about sixty successful RO units processing spentwash for past several years in India, Mexico, Vietnam etc. This company also offers a technology to further concentrate the balance spentwash & gasify the same to achieve zero liquid discharge. ---Dr. H. Characteristics of boiler feedwater?

In the manufacture of boilers, high purity feed water is required to ensure the proper functioning of the steam generating system. High purity feed water reduces the use of chemicals in the boiler due to less frequent blow downs (reducing the blow down frequency by up to 10 times).A lower purge frequency also translates into lower fuel costs. Descaling is reduced due to the lower concentration of impurities in the boiler feed water, which pollute the heat transfer surface. Lower levels of impurities also reduce the rate of corrosion in the boiler. When boilers are used to operate steam turbines, erosion of the turbine blades is reduced by the higher purity steam produced. The use of reverse osmosis (RO) in feed water treatment systems reduces chemical costs by reducing the frequency of ion exchange regeneration. A complete system, including reverse osmosis and ion exchange, often results in a more cost effective system than systems that do not use reverse osmosis. However, the common use of reverse osmosis requires significant use of pre-treatment unit operations, which also adds to the overall cost of the system. Silicate and colloidal deposits reduce the efficiency of the boiler and also cause premature failure of the turbines. Ultrafiltration can remove over 99% of colloidal silica as well as precipitated iron and aluminum. Reducing particulate matter, suspended solids and total organic carbon (TOC) also improves turbine and boiler efficiency. But the use of conventional membrane technologies has encountered significant membrane clogging problems. Task. Filtration of the boiler feed water allows for optimal downstream performance. A boiler chemicals or power plant to meet the stringent requirements for more efficient boiler efficiency. Solution Technological advances in membrane filtration systems are opening up opportunities for industrial boilers and steam. Power plants to treat boiler feed water streams to meet more stringent system performance requirements.VSEP® or New Logic Research's Vibration Cutting Advanced Processing makes this possible filter incoming water or waste water streams without the clogging problems of conventional membrane systems. Membrane system significantly reduces TDS, TSS, TOC, color, silica and inlet hardness Sources are taken from city water, well water and river / surface water, which minimizes treatment costs. The purification system uses ultrafiltration (UF), Nano filtration (NF) or reverse osmosis modules to treat the incoming water and create permeable flow meets the boiler feed water criteria for suspended and dissolved solids, silica and hardness. After final polishing with ion exchange resin, the penetrant can be used as boiler feed water. Reverse osmosis filtration can be used if an almost complete removal of dissolved solids is required, and some have started using spiral winding for this work, that is, the final polishing step. Thus, purification systems can be used to treat boiler water with minimal final polishing with ion exchange resins. This alternative separation process eliminates the need for pretreatment and can significantly reduce the use of regeneration chemicals, thereby reducing the disposal and associated costs of used regenerators. For industrial boilers and power plant systems, as well as in the cogeneration industry, membrane systems are used. This process can now be used where traditional cross-flow membrane technologies in the past faced significant membrane fouling problems. It is an attractive alternative to traditional filtration methods thanks to its innovative vibration design. pl-supplies dot com

Is the UV based water purification a better technique than reverse osmosis to treat normal water coming from municipality water tanks?

reverse Osmosis will remove all impurities from water but UV exposure will only kill bacteria in the water it will not remove impurities such as chlorine or other potentially harmful chemicals.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of osmosis?

AdvantagesReverse osmosis systems have plenty of advantages. They are friendly to the environment, as they do not produce or use any harmful chemicals during the process. These systems also require a minimal amount of power. Reverse osmosis systems work well in home filtration systems because they are typically small in size.Taste of the purified water is another distinct advantage. Reverse osmosis removes dissolved minerals and other contaminants that cause water to smell unpleasant, taste poorly and take on unusual colors.Removal of dissolved minerals, metals and other particles benefits plumbing systems. There is nothing in the water to corrode pipes or collect as sediment.DisadvantagesReverse osmosis treatments require an enormous amount of water. Such systems typically return as little as 5 to 15 percent of the water pushed through the system, which means it also takes a long time to properly treat the water. What's left then exits the system as wastewater. This amount of wastewater can burden home septic systems. Water entering the reverse osmosis system should also be free of bacteria. While reverse osmosis systems do remove nearly all microorganisms, the risk of contamination through tiny leaks or deteriorating parts prevents reverse osmosis systems from being used to remove bacteria.

Which is better Ozonation or UV for bottled water?

It really isn't a question of which is better. Both will work to do virtually the same thing however Ozonation will also treat the bottle or the container and free it of impurities. UV will not.You should start with a reverse osmosis system (RO) prior to either of these treatment.

Water Treatment Without Sodium?

For those on a low-sodium diet prescribed for health reasons, an ion exchange water treatment system is undesirable. Systems that utilize ion exchange, such as soft water conditioners, require salt in order to work, which increases sodium levels in the fluid. In order to treat your water without ingesting more sodium, alternatives exist. Carbon filtration works by providing a large surface area for contaminants to stick to. Carbon is appropriate for organic compounds, but ineffective for inorganic chemicals such as heavy metals or other toxins. Carbon is primarily used to improve the taste of water without considering its toxicity. Refrigerators commonly include carbon filtration systems with replaceable cartridges to filter water from built-in dispensers. A good rule of thumb for these systems is to replace cartridges every six months. Another water treatment method that does not increase sodium levels is reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis systems are usually used to process a small amount of drinking water at time. They are usually placed underneath the kitchen sink, where processed water is housed in a tank that holds up to five gallons. Reverse osmosis works by pushing water through a membrane with microscopic holes. Water molecules are small enough to pass through these holes, but contaminants are not. As such, heavy metals like arsenic, lead and mercury are blocked nearly completely. Reverse osmosis systems deliver water a lever is pressed on a special spout mounted on the sink. This is a very cost-effective and safe way to get clean drinking water. The disadvantage of a reverse osmosis system compared with a carbon filter is that the reverse osmosis system takes several hours to treat water. To treat water outside of the home, iodine is recommended. Iodine for water treatment purposes comes in tablet, tincture or powder/crystalline form. This is effective for heavily contaminated water, such as murky pond water where no other clean water sources are available. Iodine works better in warmer water, and the time that must pass in order to safely drink the water increases as its temperature drops. The water will have a slight after taste, but in life-or-death situations, iodine is recommended. None of these methods is suitable for treating sea water.

How do you figure out inequalities?
