First, determine what your ideal weight is. for a female with a height of 5'9", your ideal weight is between 135-155. Pay attention to your serving sizes, it the nutrition guide says 1/2 cup, then eat just the serving size. When you are done with you meal (serving sizes of each menu item) wait twenty minutes. It takes your stomach 20 minutes to alert the brain that it is satisfied. Drink an 8 oz glass of water before your each your meal. Your body requires about 1200 calories a day to lose weight. So if you are not feeding yourself, then your body goes into starvation mode and stores everything you eat for future use and conversion to energy. Always eat breakfast. eat a midmoring snack, eat lunch, eat a midafternoon snack, eat a sensible dinner, and have a glass of milk 1/2 hour before bed time. When you are feeling hungry between these times, eat fresh fruits and fresh vegetables. They carry "water weight" and keep you full longer. Finally, you did not gain the weight you are trying to lose in a short period, so logically speaking, if you gained 45 pounds over the last 12 months, don't beat yourself up if it takes you 12 months to lose it!! Set a reasonable goal. Lets say you weight 180, shoot for 18 lbs to begin with, a smaller goal is always easier to reach than a large one. Track you progress. Write down what you eat and how much, track your calories, weight yourself once a week and keep a weight chart. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. BUT you have to be accountable. When you cheat on your weight loss goal, you are only cheating yourself. One thing that really works for me is always having gum in my purse. Sometimes our body is bored, not hungry, but we tend to feed it. Thirst, hunger and boredum pains of the body are all the same and we tend to assume we are hungry. ALWAYS try gum or thirst before you feed. I would start with a low "bad carb" diet. This includes pastas, breads, carrots, corn, squash, etc.
Get plenty of exercise.
Keep your sweets intake to a minimum.
Drink lots and lots of water
When you have a craving for something that would ruin a diet, drink a glass of water and eat a handful or nuts(i suggest marcona almonds, they are delicious). This will hopefully get rid of your craving.
Eat the right proportions of means. a palm size piece of meat of fish to two or three palms of vegetables.
