The main function of fiber is to keep the digestive system healthy and functioning properly. Fiber aids and speeds up the excretion of waste and toxins from the body, preventing them from sitting in the intestine or bowel for too long, which could cause a build-up and lead to several diseases.

A good way to get fiber if your diet doesn't provide enough (whole grains, raw fruits & veggies) is Mira lax. You mix it in your food and can't tell it's even there, but you will have enough fiber to move things along within a few hours.

Fiber should be introduced gradually into the diet and can be done in a number of ways including:

  1. Start the day with porridge, high fiber cereals or wholemeal bread.
  2. Eat more portions of fruit and dried fruit.
  3. Eat potatoes with their skins intact.
  4. Include chickpeas or lentils to salads, stews and curries.
  5. Buy foods containing whole grains.
  6. Add barley to homemade soups.
  7. Remember to also increase your water intake.
  8. Try to eat more raw fruit and vegetables.
  9. Add seeds and nuts to salads or eat as a snack.
  10. Switch to brown rice, brown bread and wholemeal pasta.
