How do you know that the betta female is ready?

You know a female betta is ready when first of all the male has built his bubble nest. Second of all She has vertical stripes on her body like this ¡¡¡¡¡ not ------. It is uncommon for a female to swell up with eggs when there are no males present but this does happen sometimes. She will be fat in the abdomen, despite pooing (rule out constipation) the absence of scales sticking out (rule out dropsy) and a day or two without food (rule out full stomach). Feed her a low protein diet and lots of frozen peas. Any female betta will produce eggs when carefully conditioned for two weeks beforehand and then placed in the 'chimney' in a spawning tank (a large glass jar so the male can see her but not get to her.) She should remain here for three days to ensure she is full of eggs and ready to mate before she is let out, as otherwise the male will attack her.
