In 1556, Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was burned at the stake. He had been a prominent figure in the English Reformation but was condemned for heresy when Catholic Queen Mary I came to power. Cranmer recanted his Protestant beliefs but was executed anyway.
