Americans moved West in the year following the Civil War because of the mining of gold and silver which made a rapid growth of the U.S. and the frontier changed dramatically as more people moved westward.

The most obvious are death and the destruction of property.

Northerners who moved South to exploit a low-wage economy. (It was as easy as packing a few things in a carpet-bag and getting on the train.)

This was quite legal, but carpetbaggers were viewed as unpleasant and exploitative people, and the term became perjorative.

When the US Civil War began four states that remained in the Union had slavery. They were Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware. Until 1862, slavery also existed in Washington DC.
