After the fall of the Roman Empire, the western part of the Roman Empire fell under the strain of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. These created their own kingdoms on lands which were previously belonged to this part of the empire: the Kingdom of the Vandals in north-western Africa, the Visigothic kingdom in Spain and Portugal, the Burgundian kingdom in eastern France and the Kingdom of the Franks in Belgium and northern and central France. Switzerland and north-eastern France (Alsace and Lorraine) were taken over by the Alemanni of southern Germany. Italy was invaded by the Ostrogoths and then by the Lombards. Eventually the Franks took over the whole of France, northern and central Italy and southern and central Germany. Finally, Charlemagne conquered northern Germany and controlled most of Western Europe.

The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by the invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1000 years.
