Truth be told the British Empire was not really that strong a player in the 18th century. When you think of the British Empire, you think of this super power with full control of India, Canada, Australia, parts of Africa etc. This was not the case at all at the time of the American revolution.

The British had a very small land army based in the 13 Colonies, during this time and were forced to hire Hessian Mercenaries to bulk up there ranks. There main power lay with the Royal Navy. The US rebels had a very large land force, although it was mostly made up of part time soldiers or militia, there larger numbers defiantly made a huge difference. The rebels knew the lands a lot better, they had determination, and probably most importantly they had the backing of the French. Britains sworn enemy. It did appear for a while that Britain was going to win the war, but some good luck in the battle field pushed the Americans forward. If they had been fighting against the British Empire of the 19th century, I believe things could have went down very differently.

How did the Continentals manage to defeat the stronger British army during the Revolutionary War?

The Americans were quick and smart - striking and retreating before the British could react. The British generals were mostly stupid and dull-witted. Their better generals were in the war against France. It was common for British army units to march to a point near where the Americans were, then set up camp instead of attacking them. This gave the Americans a chance to escape and set up attacks on the British from in hiding. The French, in the form of General LaFayette and a few French navy ships helped to turn the tide. The Americans were fighting on their own ground which they knew very well. The farmers, merchants, and other non-fighting Americans helped the American army with places to stay in the winter, along with food and sometimes, clothing.
