Opinions are part of human nature; they'll go on until life ceases. People are still arguing about the US Civil War! And that war, which was also an UNDECLARED WAR, was fought well over 100 years ago!
But there are no opinions, on those two wars regarding who won and who lost, JUST FACTS. The North won both wars and the South lost in both wars (those are facts). As for the US...since the US abandoned the field in '73 (which is ironic, as that was the golden rule for losing a battle ACCORDING to US doctrine/not holding ground, etc. etc.); it might be accurate to state that the "American cause (reason/purpose) was lost in the Vietnam War."
But with the FACT that the South did lose; and the US did support the South; and US did depart under a cloud; and ultimately did depart in a frenzy during it's last days in South Vietnam during the fall of it's capital (April 1975); the argument will most probably ALWAYS BE AN ARGUMENT. Just like the American Civil War (1861-1865).
Vietnam won the French war. North Vietnam won the American Vietnam War. There was no such country named "Vietnam" during the American Vietnam War 1955-1975. There were two nations: North VN & South VN.
The former NORTH Vietnam won the war; they are known as just Vietnam today.
The North won.
The nation (country) of Vietnam didn't exist during the Vietnam War. Nor was any nation called "Vietnam" fighting the US. There was a country called North Vietnam that defeated the Republic of South Vietnam in 1975. The US was allied to the RVN (Republic of South Vietnam).
North Vietnam.
