Three countries that were once colonies of Great Britain are India, Canada, and Australia. India was a significant part of the British Empire until gaining independence in 1947. Canada became a dominion in 1867 and gradually gained full sovereignty, while Australia also transitioned from a colony to a commonwealth nation in 1901.
Although Britain once had a tremendous number of colonies all over the world, almost all of these are now independent nations. The Falkland Islands are still a colony of Britain.
In 1812, both Upper Canada and Lower Canada were British Colonies.
It rather depends what you mean by a mother country. It is usually taken to mean the country from which colonies were established in other countries, and from which those colonies are or have been governed. India was once part of the British Empire, as were the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Whilst it is true that the culture of these latter countries owes a great deal to Great Britain, it holds less true for India which already had great civilizations going back thousands of years. People anywhere might object to the term now, as they have established their own identities with influences from all over the world.
It means that independent countries who were once upon a time colonies under the British Empire.
The British Empire is another word for the commonwealth, which today is a group of nations that have colonised with Great Britain for one reason or another. Some reasons were for alliances, others for resources and help from Britain. Other countries had no choice and were annexed by Britain. +++ There is a major difference between the British Empire and the Commonwealth (capital 'C'): although the Commonwealth countries are former Imperial territories they rule themselves with the British Sovereign as titular Head of State. It is therefore an association of friendly, independent nations and although once British colonies they did NOT "colonise with" (whatever that means) Great Britain.

Before American gained its independence, it was a colony of Great Britain and Great Britain's policy is that their colonies can only trade with them and no other nation. So, when the American Revolution started and a boycott was started, then U.S. would have to rely on themselves for resources or see if any other nations are willing to trade with them.
