The Middle East is one of the world's busiest trading areas and seves as a link between Asia, Europe, and Africa. The British benefited from the money that the trade brought to the region, and in the 20th century used it for oil as well.
Great Britain helped or opposed the Ottoman Empire due to its interests. For ex. in Crimean War it helped, in Egyptian Crisis it helped but in Tripoli War, it abandoned.

And, the middle east is the primary source of global terrorism. The September 11th terrorists originated in the middle east (specifically, they were Egyptians based in Afghanistan).
